TRAINING SESSION – UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE – WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

This is a continuation of the training session from the previous post which introduced the session and identified the learning objectives. This part of the training session will answer a key question which is, what is emotional intelligence?

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

Display the slide titled – WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

Direct them to the section in their workbook with the same title. It has an activity asking them to write down how they would define emotional intelligence.

WORKBOOK – WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

Give them 3-minutes to do that. When the time is up, stop them and ask every to write their definition in the chat window. Give them 2-minutes to do that.

As they write out their definitions read through them quietly. When the 2-minutes is up, thank them for doing the activity and read out their definitions so everyone can hear.

Then tell them you have a definition of emotional intelligence to share with them. Direct them to the part of their workbook titled – DEFINING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.

Give them 90-seconds to read the information there.

After they finish reading, ask them for any comments and/or questions. Listen to any they have and only respond if necessary.

Next, move on to answer the next question which is, why is emotional intelligence important for us?

INTRODUCTION

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use and manage our emotions in positive ways. Emotional intelligence has great benefits in helping us manage our own behaviour and interact with others. It is believed to be one of the most important leadership qualities because it can help us interact with others and influence them in much more productive ways. In this session, participants will explore what emotional intelligence is. They will also discuss the components of emotional intelligence.

PREPARATION

  • Read through all the resources (facilitation guide, workbook, and presentation) to understand how they all work together to deliver the session.

PREREQUISITES

  • None

INTRODUCE THE SESSION

Introduce the session by sharing the learning objectives with them. Display the slide titled – LEARNING OBJECTIVES.

After displaying the slide, tell them that:

  • Emotional intelligence is an important leadership quality that helps us to manage our own behaviour and positively influence others.
  • During this session, we are going to discuss what emotional intelligence is.
  • We will also explore the main behaviours of emotional intelligence

Let them know that during the session they will answer two questions which are:

  • What is emotional intelligence?
  • Why is emotional intelligence important?
  • What are the core behaviours of emotional intelligence?

Ask if they have any questions and/or comments about what you just told them. Listen to any questions or comments they have and respond appropriately.
